Superficial Quenching
Superficial Quenching is often applied in medium carbon steel and medium alloy steel, such as 45# steel and 40Cr steel. After surface quenching, the tooth hardness could be 40-55 HRC. Its characters are fatigue point corrosion resistance, wear resistance and the good ability for anti-scoring. Because the tooth center is not hardened, the tooth still get enough toughness to bear the impact load.
Quenching Carburizing
Quenching carburizing is often applized in low carbon steel and low carbon alloy steel, such as 20# steel and 21Cr steel, after quenching carburizing, the tooth hardness can reach 56-62HRC, and the tooth center still stay in high toughness. The bend strength and contact strength of tooth are high, wear resistance still quite nice. So this surface treatment is usually used for the importance gear which dure impact load. However, it will cause the tooth deformation and need to be grinded.
Carburizing

Carburizing is a kind of chemical heat treatment for surface. After carburizing, the tooth hardness can reach 700-900HV. Because this heat treatment make the tooth a high hardness with quite low process temperature, and it only cause little deformation, the carburizing is often applied in inner gear, gears hard to grind and the gears of carburizing steel (has Lead, molybdenum, aluminium), such as 38CrMoAl.
Thermal Refining
Thermal Refining is often applied in medium carbon steel and medium carbon alloy steel, such as 45# steel, 40Cr and 35SiMn. After thermal refining, the suface hardness is 220-280HBS. Because
the hard strength is not so high, the precision machining could be done after this heat treatment.
Normalizing
Normalizing can eliminate the inside stress, do the grain refineness, improve the mechanical properties and cutting performance. The medium carbon normalizing can be used in the gear of not so high mechanical stress, and iron steel normalizing can be used in gear of big diameter.
